Married to the Job
The legacy of Thomas Telford

Having looked at the achievements of Richard Trevithick and Isambard Kingdom Brunel, Mikron explores the life of the Scottish engineer, Thomas Telford, in the 250th anniversary year of his birth.

Telford never married or had children, but dedicated his life to designing and building hundreds of miles of roads and canals, as well as bridges and aqueducts, which are part of the British landscape.

These days, great buildings and bridges are better known for the architects who designed them than for the engineers who constructed them. Can you name an engineer at work in Britain in 2007? And, although more women have been entering traditionally male professions over the past 30 years, what is there in engineering for a woman?

In a production laced with humour and original songs and music, Married to the Job tells the story of one of Britain’s greatest engineers, and challenges the assumption that engineering is merely a job for the boys.

This production is supported by the Institution of Civil Engineers
